Cotton Mill Threadworks Newsletter May 2012

Magnifico is on its way!

Domestic. Embroidery. Longarm. No matter what machine(s) you have Magnifico will perform beautifully. Superior's new 40 wt. high-tenacity trilobal thread is strong, smooth, lint-free and colourfast - 200 high sheen colours on convenient 3,000 yd. cones - and priced at only $13.95 per cone. I've already had a test run for both decorative stitching and quilting, and Magnifico lives up to its name!

The first 15 colours are arriving at CMT on May 9th, in time for the Common Thread QG show in Ottawa. Watch the sidebar for photos and colour descriptions. (The remaining 185 colours are scheduled to arrive by late summer.)

It's an economical time to stock up on cones of Masterpiece 50 wt. cotton and Bottom Line 60 wt. polyester as the spring cone sale continues!

Extra-long staple, Egyptian-grown cotton is what makes Masterpiece a smooth, low-lint thread, useful for piecing and other applications. Available not just in the usual neutrals, but also in some deliciously murky colours (179 Florin - a dark grey, 180 Tassel - a muddy, peaty colour, and 181 Nightscape which has is a real chameleon of a colour). And if you need a creamy neutral that can take you into the soft yellows 184 Buttercream is now in stock. Save $5.00 per cone - $22.95 each (reg. $27.95)

Bottom Line is a versatile polyester used for hand and invisible machine applique, as a bobbin thread (its light weight prevents heavy thread build-up and lets you load lots on your bobbin), and as a machine quilting thread for those designs that require a fine thread. A choice of neutrals that will take blend with a wide range of colours. Buy any 2 cones for $25.00 (regularly $16.50 each).

With all these wonderful threads available on cones don't forget to add the Superior Thread Holder to your sewing room equipment. The design enables you to use it with cones, spools or bobbins, making it a complete thread delivery system.

You don't need silicone lubricant to make your threads work! (Silicone may also be detrimental to your machine's insides.) What you do need is:

- Good quality thread - smooth, no slubs or fuzziness

- Correct needle (I use Titanium Topstitch for everything) - 70/10 for fine threads such as MonoPoly, Kimono Silk #100 or Bottom Line 60 wt., 80/12 for 50-wt. threads such as Masterpiece, and a 90/14 for any thread 40 wt. or heavier plus metallics. Superior threads usually have a suggested needle size right on the spool/cone.

- Tension - don't be afraid of this teensy dial - it's what makes your stitches beautiful! Fine weight and metallic threads need a looser upper thread tension (smaller number). Whenever you see bobbin thread poking up to the top loosen your tension, and vice versa. Use this handy guide as a reference.
